Coprostanol is a stereoisomer (same molecular formula but different three dimensional orientation) of cholestanol that is produced from cholesterol in the digestive tract (by bacterial hydrogenation).
Coprostanol is excreted with the faeces and is used as a biomarker for the detection of human faeces.
